Stefanie Blain-Moraes leads the Biosignal Interaction and Personhood Technology (BIAPT) lab, an interdisciplinary research group funded by all three branches of the federal Tri-Council. The BIAPT lab applies advanced signal processing and machine learning algorithms to electroencephalographic (EEG) and autonomic nervous system (ANS) data to classify states of human consciousness and emotions. Technologies for detecting consciousness are targeted to aid diagnostic and prognostic decision-making in intensive care units, while technologies for enhancing interaction are being developed for individuals with autism and dementia. Ultimately, these assistive technologies will be deployed at point-of-care to enhance assessment of and interaction with non-communicative individuals.
