The Canada Research Chair in molecular and cellular biomechanics is aimed at addressing specific muscle (skeletal and cardiac) and neuromuscular diseases using a unique mixture of femto-, nano-, and micro-technology approaches to help specific patient populations. Areas of focus include cerebral palsy, Duchennes and myotonic muscular dystrophies, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and dilatational cardiac myopathies. Structural changes on the molecular and cellular level associated with diseases are associated with functional implications for the patients. Particular emphasis is on the development of conservative treatment strategies to prevent disease, or to reverse, stop and slow down ongoing disease processes through an understanding of the molecular causes of the pathology.
