Where is the data from?

Cognit.ca uses data from a number of sources including the awards databases of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Facilities listings are provided by the Canada Foundation for Innovation’s (CFI) Research Facilities Navigator. Licensing opportunities are provided by institutions and patent data is extracted from the European Patent Office's worldwide patent database.

How is the ordering of researchers and institutions determined?

Cognit.ca attempts to identify and order institutions and researchers based on the level of activity for a given search term. We infer activity level based on the relevance of the project's title, description and keywords to the search term, the size of the research project, and the role of the researcher. It is important to note that at present this analysis only considers research projects that are funded by one of Canada's three granting councils.

Is Cognit.ca fully bilingual?

Cognit.ca's interface is fully bilingual. The underlying data is provided in the user's preferred language if available, otherwise it is provided in the it's original language. As a result of some some source data being only available in one language or the other, it can be beneficial to search for both French and English terms using Cognit.ca's Boolean search functionality.
