Methods of identifying cattle having increased feed efficiency using a small panel of single nucleotide polymorphisms is provided. The method provides for using a thousand or less of such SNPs and includes using a panel of 250 or fewer SNPs. The method if useful with various cattle breeds including crossbred cattle.
