Project Summary
This application is for a thermal analysis system consisting of a Thermogravimetric Analyzer (TGA/DTA), a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) and a Mass Spectrometer (MS) detector. The thermal analysis equipment requested will replace and upgrade a now no-longer operable TGA/DSC apparatus that has served the user group in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering Departments (PI's: DW Kirk, CQ Jia., SJ Thorpe, K Lian, H Tran, S Argyropoulos, and V Papangelakis) for over 8 years. This analytical equipment allows the PI's and their students to develop an understanding of fundamental chemical and physical transformations induced by thermal energy which leads to development of new materials and processes. D. Kirk is developing a novel biochar absorbent. C. Jia is developing a new Fluid Coke product. K. Lian is advancing polymer electrolytes. S.Thorpe is developing a new class of bulk amorphous alloys. S. Argyropoulos is investigating the fundamentals of formation of intermetallic phases. V. Papangelakis is developing sustainable mineral extraction processes. H. Tran is improving industrial energy and chemical recovery in the kraft pulping process. Details for the group members are available in their 100 Forms.
