Project Summary

Internationally, it is recognized that research benefits from meaningful stakeholder involvement. However, how stakeholders (e.g., patients and families) are engaged in research is not self-evident and the demand for such roles has not kept pace with the need for appropriate training. In 2018, researchers at McMaster University partnered with two parent advisors to develop and deliver an online training program in family engagement in research: 'Family Engagement in Research Certificate of Completion Program'. This program is unique in that it brings families of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities together with researchers from across Canada and internationally in a 10-week online course. The first two cohorts of the certificate program are now complete with an additional two cohorts in progress (~ 100 graduates). We are currently evaluating the feasibility and short-term impacts of the program. The aim of this research is to explore the longer-term impacts, as well as the sustainability and scalability of the program. Findings from this study will provide key insight into the impact of training in patient-oriented research and will have a transformative impact on the way child health research is conducted in Canada.
