Each year, approximately 1000 Canadians sustain an acute traumatic spinal cord injury and join close to 40,000 paralyzed individuals across our nation who endure one of the most physically and psychologically devastating of injuries. We have recently shown that two novel populations of stem cells we have identified, one of which derives from the skin, and one from the brain, can promote anatomical and/or functional recovery when transplanted into the injured spinal cord. While these studies were performed with rodent cells, we have shown that similar stem cells are present in humans. In this proposal we will ask whether the human cells also promote recovery from spinal cord injury and, if so, will pursue preclinical and ethics studies with the ultimate goal of, if warranted, providing the basis for a human clinical trial to treat this devastating and currently untreatable condition.
