At present, most 4G wireless networks need higher capacity and peak throughput. LTE (Long Term Evolution) is an emerging wireless communication standard, whose goal is to improve bandwidth utilization, and Ericsson Canada is a world leader in this technology. In LTE, the Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP) algorithms are devoted to improving the aggregate cell throughput, the cell edge user throughput, as well as the coverage gaps at the cell edges. The processing and control for CoMP implementations are currently coordinated either centrally or through use of a distributed processing architecture. Using distributed processing for CoMP has the potential of lowering latency and reducing complexity, with a possible tradeoff in performance. We want to apply analysis to both existing homogeneous macro cell networks as well as heterogeneous networks with small cell deployments.Currently existing LTE networks apply the methods discussed above, and determining which one to use in which case is a complex decision. The idea of this project is thus to investigate and propose an evaluation framework and methodology for distributed CoMP processing, propose candidate distributed control algorithms and to evaluate the performance of the CoMP solutions based on complexity and latency metrics. The idea is to consider new algorithms for improving utilization. We want to employ a distributed processing architecture to evaluate distributed CoMP processing and possible throughput and capacity gains.To do so, we will employ a formal discrete-event Modeling and Simulation (M&S) methodology called Discrete-Event Systems specification formalism (DEVS). DEVS provides a mechanism for resolving such generic M&S problems, allowing for more efficient asynchronous execution. Carleton's team is a worldwide expert in DEVS, and has defined a set of related tools and algorithms in this field, which will be used during this research. Ericsson is a world leader in LTE technology, and their experts will provide the requirements for the problems to be solved, and participate in the development and validation of the proposed methods.
