Abstract

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods of reproducibly and easily fabricating a nanometer-scale pore (nanopore) in a thin solid dielectric membrane.SOLUTION: A method for fabricating a nanopore in a solid dielectric membrane includes: applying an electric potential that induces an electric field greater than 0.1 V/nm to a membrane made of a dielectric material so as to generate a leakage current; monitoring the leakage current flowing across the membrane while the electric potential is being applied to the membrane; detecting an abrupt increase in the leakage current; and removing the electric potential across the membrane in response to detecting the abrupt increase in the leakage current.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
